Difference Between KDM and Hallmark Gold

The purity of gold has been one of the greatest concerns when one buys gold. But with the advent of hallmarking by BIS in India, gold consumers are feeling with their purchases. To ensure you are not cheated when purchasing physical gold (gold coins Jewellery); it is suggested to go for hallmarked gold articles. Not only it ensures purity but also helps you get better resale value when you sell gold in Bangalore or anywhere else.

You might have heard about Hallmark gold and KDM. Let us discuss what they really mean.

Hallmark Gold

Hallmark gold is the process of certifying the purity of gold. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)- the National Standards Body of India is responsible for hallmarking gold. When you see “BIS hallmark” engraved on your jewellery or gold coins, it means that your gold complies with the BIS standards.

Hallmarking only gives the customer more assurance to buy gold and also sell gold. A hallmark sign is a triangle with a BIS hallmark written beneath it.

KDM Gold

KDM gold is a type of gold which is a mixture of gold as well as cadmium. It consists of 92 percent gold and 8 percent of cadmium. The word KDM is derived from cadmium alloy. The reason for this mixture is to attain a high standard purity in gold. But due its effects on artisans who worked with it, it is now banned by BIS. Cadmium is now replaced by zinc and other metals.

KDM gold charges depend on the prevailing gold rate at the time of your purchase. However, through the given formula you can calculate the final price of your jewellery:

Price of gold X (Weight in grams) + Making charges + GST at 3% on (Price of jewellery + making charges)
